T: I won’t go terribly in depth. Actually, there’s not a lot to go in depth about (more on that in a minute). For the quintessential Mat Kearney review, most definitely search mauiloveschachi for R’s review of his concert last month (an amazing concert).
Tonight, R and I jumped into J’s car and sped off to Malibu. Mat was performing outside on a bluff overlooking the glorious Pacific Ocean. Seriously, this would overtake The Greek as my favorite concert location if they actually let non Pepperdine people in. Luckily, J is an alumnus. And, as he pointed out, they clearly weren’t going to turn anyone away tonight (not a huge crowd—but VERY enthusiastic).
We’ve had great weather the last week in LA and great weather is expected again. It wasn’t great tonight. It started sprinkling as we pulled up to park. That was cool. J was his usual smart self and brought a bottle of champagne. And glasses. That’s our J. So we had our champagne in the car (rebels, right? Reminded me of high school!). Then we walked down to the lawn and the rain started more steadily. And it just got more, um, steady…as the night went on.
Mat was amazing, per usual. Unfortunately, we only got 6 songs out of him because of the rain. They actually had to take a break in the middle of his set because of all the water. Speakers had to be covered. All three of us were pretty wet. Thank goodness for umbrellas. Mat gave the crowd his all, though. And his always fun personality was out in full force.
In a weird way, I’m kind of glad it rained. It felt…somehow…special to be there with R and our wonderful friend J…standing in the pouring rain, listening to, probably, my favorite singer/musician. Right there in Malibu…on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. That may sound odd. But it was kind of perfect.
Mat Kearney is one hell of a talent. You all owe it to yourselves to see him live. God, it’s so worth it.
