Save These Shows, Part 2 (Pardon the long delay)
M: I had better see some GCB, 30 Rock & Raising Hope in the upfront this year.
T: Comments after the jump.
GCB - seems like a lock but it ain’t over until the fat lady sings. It’s satirical enough for my taste (no Suburgatory, but enjoyably silly) yet soapy enough to have broader appeal. ABC is testing it out in Desperate Housewives time slot (although with a Once Upon a Time repeat, so not truly fair test), but I’d say this one has good odds, and I’d like to it back. (T: Will be curious to see how it does. ABC is in definite rebuilding mode. While I don’t think this show is the salvation it needs, I do completely enjoy it. But it’s gonna be tough to think it can anchor 9p on Sunday. The Good Wife Just got the best Easter present ever.)
30 Rock - hasn’t been renewed, but this has to be just a formality right? Unless the talent wants to pursue other projects? Please don’t let this go away. (T: One last—dare I say, probably reduced season. I know you love it, M. I enjoy it. But no one watches it but us.)
Raising Hope - must be renewed. T and I agree here - there is nothing else like it on broadcast right now (except My Name Is Earl repeats, if they are around). But it hits the same sweet spot of sweetness, silliness in a rare working class package. It’s a unique combination that more people should check out. Kind of like King of the Hill, was, although I didn’t set my DVR for that. (T: You captured the essence of the show. I don’t know of a sitcom that is so loopy and hilarious…then, almost every episode brings it back to heartwarming before one final crazy moment. LOVE it.)
Alcatraz - OK - I don’t care that much, but I kind of like having it around. In the way that T gives Hawaii 5-0 & Missing leeway for factors like their settings, I think Alcatraz is super-cool and fascinating.
Since T posted his picks, I believe Up All Night has been renewed, so good move, NBC! (T: Has this happened?! I haven’t seen this!)
And ABC, Bravo for renewing Happy Endings. It’s so funny and clever & silly - reminds me of Better Off Ted, which was hilarious, but apparently the characters weren’t likable enough. Anyone ever seen Arrested Development? (T: This too?! I can’t find any confirmation—though I think it will be. Have you gone crazy tonight M, or are you talking to sources?!)
On another note, why hasn’t anyone done a Bermuda Triangle show? Talk about captivating. (T: Not a bad idea!)
